The Social Collision Of Immigration, Identity And Race

Abstract This analytical paper highlights the social collision of immigration, identity and race to society. Similarly, this paper focuses on the impact of struggling with life changes. This paper will link the book called Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to the theme identity. I will also use this book to describe these three conflicts encountered by Ifemelu, the main character. The way I will approach this paper is by conducting a thorough analysis between each conflict and its collision with society. I will use examples and quotes from the book to convey the information. Thus, this will create a sense of logic, order, and understanding in this paper. In the transition of migrating to America, she envisioned herself being in a house like in The Cosby Show and attending a school where students held notebooks (Adichie, 2014, p.122). However, when she arrived, â€Å"she stared at the buildings and cars and signboards, all of them matte†¦in the landscape of her imagination, the mundane things in America were covered in high-shine gloss† (Adichie, 2014, p.127). Although Ifemelu was disappointed about the misconstrued beauty she beheld of America, she was going to experience a perennial encounter with the truth about life in America. As Ifemelu struggled to assimilate her new environment, she became self aware of the cultural collision that surrounded her. â€Å"Ifemelu could not sleep, her mind too alert to the newness of things†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Adichie, 2014, p.130). She was eager to unravel America and acquire a sense of belonging. Ifemelu attends the library in search to comprehend the American culture (Adichie, 2014, p.166). Moreover, she traveled using the subway trains from Brooklyn to Manhattan in hopes of gasping her surrounding (Adich ie, 2014, p.145). In autumn, Ifemelu went to college and was confronted with Cristina Tomas at the registration office.
